Cross Patonce by Geoff Richards was commissioned by Pilkington PLC for the 1990 North West Open Brass Band Championships (U.K.), sponsored in conjunction with the Rainford Silver Band. The title refers to the Cross Patonce, the heraldic emblem that serves as the logo of Pilkington PLC, reflecting the company’s identity, heritage, and guiding motto. Richards uses this symbolism as the foundation for a work that blends tradition with expressive contemporary brass writing. The piece is structured as a suite in three movements, performed continuously without breaks. Rather than presenting clearly separated sections, the music unfolds as a single, cohesive arc, allowing themes and textures to evolve organically across contrasting moods and characters. Central to Cross Patonce is an adaptation of an old French regret from the Auvergne region titled Une gente bergère. This melody tells the story of lost love and longing and would historically have been performed on special occasions such as weddings and festivals. Richards draws on the plaintive lyricism of this source material, shaping it through variation and development to provide both emotional depth and structural unity. Through its combination of reflective lyricism, ceremonial strength, and rhythmic vitality, Cross Patonce functions both as a tribute to Pilkington’s corporate symbol and as a broader meditation on tradition, memory, and communal expression within the brass band medium.
