Odyssey Variations is drawn from Kevin Norbury’s earlier work Odyssey, composed as the Championship Section test piece for the 1999 European Brass Band Championship. That original piece holds deep personal significance for the composer, and the later set of variations revisits and reshapes its most important musical ideas with greater reflection and perspective. During the 1999 championship, Norbury learned of the Columbine High School shooting while attending the competition. The news cast a long shadow over the event and profoundly affected him. In response, Odyssey became more than a technical test piece; it became a personal and emotional statement. At the heart of the work is a theme first introduced as a demanding cornet solo, written to be both exposed and expressive. This melody forms the foundation of Odyssey Variations, serving as the emotional core from which all of the subsequent transformations grow. The theme itself is a setting of the familiar hymn Be Thou My Vision, an ancient Irish text translated by Mary E. Byrne and later versified by Eleanor H. Hull. Norbury’s treatment of this melody is reverent but not literal, allowing its shape and character to emerge gradually. As the variations unfold, the hymn tune is refracted through a wide range of moods, from quiet introspection to moments of strength, urgency, and resolve. Throughout the piece, Norbury uses contrast to powerful effect. Solo lines suggest individual reflection and vulnerability, while fuller ensemble passages convey unity and collective purpose. Rhythmic vitality and rich harmonic writing keep the music moving forward, even in its most contemplative moments. Odyssey Variations ultimately feels like a journey shaped by experience and memory. By revisiting material born from a moment of shared tragedy, Norbury offers a work that balances technical brilliance with sincerity, reflection, and quiet affirmation.
